I moved to Baton Rouge in 2011 and fell in love with this city during my college years. This city has become home to my family and my favorite memories with my husband, Nathan, and my two dogs have been formed here.
Our life changed when my husband was diagnosed with testicular cancer in January of 2022. The months that followed were filled with surgery, blood work, scary words, more blood work, and chemotherapy treatments.
Later that year, his cancer went into remission and our life shifted back to “normal”. This shift should have been filled with celebration, but our life no longer felt "normal" and remission brought a mix of emotions for us both. I am so grateful for our health [and my husbands life] but so many pieces of his cancer journey were hard to process and they allowed anxiety to take root in my life. In an effort to distract myself, I went back to an old hobby and started started sketching again. Drawing gave me a sense of calm and made me feel peaceful. I found joy in creating beautiful things after a season of life that had not felt beautiful or enjoyable.
In August of that year, I created Southern Sketch, LLC with the goal of finding a way for the pieces that had granted me joy, to bring that into the lives of others as well.
Although I battle imposter syndrome often, this small business has been an outlet for my own healing [along with a bunch of therapy]. I hope you can find a print or a piece here that will remind you of the many things we have to be grateful for.
